NWL

Bowel Cancer Screening

WELCOME

Bowel Cancer is one of the most common types of cancer diagnosed in the U.K. The earlier it is detected, the higher the chance treatment will be successful. NWL is therefore offering a Bowel Cancer Screening, called a FIT test, to help employees to detect early signs of bowel cancer.

What is Bowel Cancer?

Bowel cancer, also known as colon, rectal or colorectal cancer is the result of the cells that make up the bowel growing too quickly and forming a clump of abnormal cells known as a bowel polyp. Polyps are not bowel cancers but they can sometimes change into cancer over a number of years.

Bowel Cancer Risk Factors

Everyone is at risk of developing bowel cancer. Things that can increase your risk though include:

  • getting older (8 out of 10 people diagnosed with bowel cancer are over 60)
  • not being active enough
  • being overweight
  • a diet high in red and processed meat and low in fibre, vegetables and fruits
  • smoking
  • drinking too much alcohol
  • having type 2 diabetes
  • having inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease)
  • a family history of bowel cancer

Symptoms of Bowel Cancer

Symptoms of bowel cancer include:

  • blood in your stool
  • looser stools, going to the toilet more often and/or constipation
  • a pain or lump in your tummy
  • feeling more tired than usual for some time
  • losing weight for no obvious reason

Symptoms don’t necessarily mean that you have bowel cancer. If you have any of these symptoms, please do not order a test via this website and instead speak to your GP.
If you are unable to contact your GP, please contact your NWG Living Well digital GP, details can be found at https://nwglivingwell.co.uk/body/digitalgp/

What is FIT testing for Bowel cancer?

FIT testing is used as a screening tool to detect bowel cancer at a very early stage in individuals who have no symptoms. The test detects tiny amounts of blood in the fecal sample that would not be seen with the naked eye because polyps (the small clump of cells that forms on the lining of the colon) and bowel cancers sometimes bleed.

You can complete the test in the comfort of your own home, collecting one single sample and then post it back directly to our laboratory. Your result will be review by our clinical team and then sent to you via an encrypted email. If your result is abnormal, our doctor may call you to discuss your result.

Finding blood does not diagnose bowel cancer however indicates further investigation and in this instance, we would refer you to your GP. There is a risk that as the result of a positive test complications are caused during or after a colonoscopy, and cancer may also be missed if it was not bleeding at the time of sample collection. FIT testing, therefore, does not guarantee that you do not have bowel cancer or that it would not develop in the future. It is therefore important for you to know the risks and symptoms outlined above. Please also note, FIT testing is not a test for symptoms.
